Sir.

70 16735

In reply to your letter of the lat

ultimo, I am directed by the Marquess Curzon

of Kedleston to state that His Lordship is

reluctant to apply to the Lords Commissioners

of His Majesty's Treasury for a further

increase in the allowance to be paid to the

Chief Justice of Hongkong for sitting as

Appeal Judge at Shanghai as the amount already

sanctioned does not appear to be inadequate.

2.

I am to suggest therefore for the

consideration of the Secretary of State for

the Colonies that the Chief Justice might be

asked if he is willing to accept the arrange-

ment as at present authorised before the

Treasury is again approached on the

subject.

he Under Secretary of Sta te

Colonial Office.

I am,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

E.Wellesley
